Artist bio: Serena Caffrey (she/they) is a transdisciplinary artist investigating time, longing, and land-body relationality. Embodiment is the creative hub of their practice, and her drawings, prints, text-based works, and collaborative, experimental films synthesize movement-based research that ranges from performactic to athletic. Together these gestures ask question the im/possibility of settler belonging, otherworldliness, and the sublime. Caffrey received their BA in Studio Arts from Bard College where their thesis performance, The Anxiety of Being Wrong, gained numerous honors including the John Bard Prize in the arts. She has been an artist in residence at ArtFarm Nebraska and the Olana State Historic Site in Hudson, NY. Her drawing and print work has been exhibited internationally in Milan and Kyoto, and her performances have premiered at the Gowanus Ballroom in Brooklyn, The Mortuary Los Angeles, and The Bootleg Theatre in Los Angeles. Caffrey has appeared in productions by Redwing Blackbird Theatre; Roxanne Steinberg, Oguri, and Carmine Escobar; Lucie Vitková; and Cody Putman. She writes for and about artists, including the recently published monograph on Erin Morrison (The Contemporary Art Digest, 2019). Currently based in Los Angeles, they perform musically with Borey Shin under the name Borey & Essyre. Artist website and social media: @essyre__
